Spraying for gnats is not talked about as much as they seem to be less problematic. They are still annoying though especially because many of them are hard to even notice until you're getting bitten. Some are so small that you don't even see them.

To those that have them, deer flies tend to be at the top of the list of most annoying summer pests. They have multi-colored wings, fly at nearly the speed of Ricky Bobby, dive bomb your head repeatedly, are super hard to catch or swat, and then hurt a lot when they tire of tormenting you and go in for a bite. Quite a few people have allergic reactions to their bites. On of our neighbors had his face swell up and another said if his hands get bit his fingers swell up like sausages. Horse flies are larger, more clumsy and easier to kill. They still have a good bite to them though.

I don't think anyone needs an explanation of what a mosquito is. Did you know we have many breeds of mosquitoes? When you're wondering why the bites hurt more with some, less with others, why are some mosquitoes larger, smaller, darker, lighter, striped like a tiger, etc. We have at least 7 common species of mosquito in MN and all of them like to crash parties in your back yard. Which species arrives uninvited depend on the time of the year.

Ticks tend to be the most active in May and then the adults continue to be active through June. They are less noticeable, typically their bites hurt less if at all, but they do carry some horrible diseases that when left untreated can be life altering. Slapping does nothing to them, they hang on tight when you try to wipe them off, even crushing them takes a little effort. Luckily, spraying for them with insecticides is highly effective.
